Tradition: A Strega Way

I have high hopes for “A Strega Way.”

I’d like to get ASW become an incorporated non-profit, and then people could start local branches under ASW’s umbrella.

I’d like to make a list of holidays everyone affiliated with ASW observes, and then each branch can add other holidays significant to their members.

I’d like to have an online password protected Grimiore that each ASW member contributes something to once a month, and each member as access to the Grimiore.

I’d like to have a daily rite that everyone does the same way around the same time, so ASW starts building traditions and energy.

I’d like to build a community where like-minded Strega and Roman Pagans can practice a religion that may be similar to what our ancestors practiced, but I’d like to think our ancestors would recognize what we’re doing, and why.

I’d like to have online rituals for those who don’t have a local branch to connect to.

No, I am not a hereditary witch, and I have not been initiated into any other Strega group. What we do here will be establishing a Tradition of traditions. People from various Strega walks of life will come and add to our Strega melting pot. And any genuine seekers can be taught and initiated by a local branch at the branch’s discretion. Anyone interested in Strega can join the non-branch mother branch and have access to online videos and our community, etc.

I don’t want to see ASW turn into an Italian version of Wicca. Our deities are great. Our mythology is great. Our holidays are great. We don’t need to borrow from outside groups when Strega itself has a rich history er can pull from.

A Strega Way…aka “Why is this blog here?”

Since the beginning of my Pagan journey, I found myself drawn to  several Roman deities, and Roman mythology in general. It made sense to me; I am Italian, and have always been proud of my heritage. But being the Italian witch surrounded by mostly Wiccans and Celtic Pagans has not been that easy.

I’ve been invited to join study groups. I’ve been invited to join covens. I’ve participated, and over the years it’s became painfully clear that my Roman world will not fit into the Wheel of the Year. I want to study with people who revere the gods I revere, celebrate the holidays I celebrate, or I’d rather practice alone.

It got me thinking.  I want to start an online Strega group, but I want it to include all types of Strega, not just Grimassi Strega or family line Strega. Those two would be included too, but I also want to include the Benedicaria and Roman Paganism, etc.

Most groups I come across for Strega are either in Italian (which sadly I don’t know yet), are offline in a geographical area I’m not local to, or are online only, and it’s not enough for me.

What if I started a community that was organized online, but we’d have meetups via webcam, like via Google Hangouts / Google Plus (free accounts, anyone can have one.) We could do anything the member base is looking for – study group, social group, discussion group, book club, ritual, etc.

I figure I can’t be the sole Strega out there who feels they’d rather worship alone than worship with the wrong group. I can’t be the only one who gets excited when someone says they’re a Roman Pagan or a Strega, and then worships the Wheel. (Can someone please tell me what the Hell Ostara has to do with Strega? Anyone!? Grrr)

I want to bring us all together, and together, we can compare notes and start our own groups. I have many ideas, and I’m hoping to hear more. Who knows, many of us may have other Strega nearby they didn’t even know about.

I am going to take this slow, though. We’ll start with events via Google Hangouts or Skype or what have you, and we’ll make a facebook group.

If it’s meant to be, you’ll find me. May the goddess Diana assist the right people in their search. Diana, may this group be as blessed as you are loved!

It is done. 🙂
